Province Introduction of China: Jiangsu Published: 01 Apr 2009 18:34:46 PSTKey InformationIntroduction Jiangsu province lies at the center of China’s east coast. It borders Shandong to the north, Anhui to the west, and Zhejiang and Shanghai to the south. Its geographic make-up is comprised mainly of plains, abundant rivers and numerous lakes. The third and fourth largest freshwater lakes in China, Lake Taihu and Lake Hongze, can be found here, while Yangtze River, the longest river in China, cuts through the province in the south before flowing into the East China Sea. The name “Jiangsu” comes from Jiang, short for the city of Jiangning (now called Nanjing), and Su, for the city of Suzhou. There are 13 cities in this province, with Nanjing being the provincial capital. Economic Overview In 2006, Jiangsu’s GDP was RMB 2154.8 billion (US$274.5 billion), making it the third largest (in terms of GDP) amongst all the provinces in China. Guangdong and Shandong are the first and second largest respectively. Jiangsu is known for its “Su Nan (or Southern Jiangsu) Model” which developed many booming collective and township enterprises in the 1980s and 1990s. Township enterprises are government-funded enterprises that were set up by rural farmers and the remaining workforce after the government made appeals to them to do so. They started to prosper as a result of reforms carried out by the government. Until the mid-1990s, township enterprises were a fast-growing sector and were the main contributors to Jiangsu’s economy. Today, however, township enterprises are slowly losing their importance in Jiangsu’s economy as industrial parks in the province bring in the big bucks from foreign investors. Fixed asset investment, which rose 20.3% to RMB 1006.4 billion, maintained a stable growth in 2006. Among the urban fixed asset investments, investments in the agriculture industry and service sectors amounted to RMB 1.6 billion, RMB 343.9 billion, and RMB 401.9 billion respectively. The five industries that have the highest amount of fixed asset investment are real estate, environmental and public utilities, transportation and storage, communication, computer and other electronic manufacturing, and electrical, heat and water production and supply. Jiangsu is the third largest consumer market in 2006, with retail sales of consumer goods amounting to RMB 662.3 billion and accounting for 8.7% of China’s total. Major retail giants such as Wal-Mart from the U.S., Metro and OBI from Germany, Carrefour and Auchan from France, B&Q from the UK, and China Resources Vanguard from Hong Kong have established their presence in Jiangsu. Meanwhile, local enterprises have also grown quickly. Examples of these are Suguo, Suning, and Wenfeng Big World. As evidenced, food makes up more than one third of per capita expenditure. Chinese stocks open 0.53% lower on ThuPublished: 11 Mar 2009 21:44:30 PST

Mar. 12, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Chinese stocks opened slightly lower on Thursday extending yesterday's losses.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A shares and B shares on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, opened slightly lower at 2,127.73, down 0.53% from Wednesday.

The Shenzhen Component Index on the smaller Shenzhen Stock Exchange opened 0.51% lower at 7,900.87 points.

Nov. 5, 2009 (China Knowledge) - State Grid Corp of China, the nation's largest power supplier, posted a loss of RMB 16.05 billion for the first nine months of this year, sources reported.

SGCC recorded a loss of RMB 22.77 billion from the grid business in the first three quarters. Its debt/asset ratio was 65.66% as of the end of September, up 2.6 percentage points since the beginning of this year.

The loss was mainly due to an increase in the cost of thermal power and to decreasing profits from power gird enterprises, said a representative of SGCC. Sources also indicated that 25 out of SGCC's 30 local subsidiaries posted losses in the first three quarters.

The business losses in the first nine months will impact financing costs and lead to difficulties, added the representative.

SGCC sold 1.67 trillion kWh of electricity in the first nine months of this year, 2.1% more than in the same period of 2008. The firm invested RMB 187.56 billion in fixed assets during the period, 8.8% more than in the same period of last year. The investment included RMB 182.27 billion in grid projects, 9.6% more year on year.

Sales in these categories experienced year-on-year growth of 28.9%, 47.2% and 29.2 %, respectively. Furthermore, consumption in tertiary industries, which include culture, tourism, education, and telecommunications, benefited from the week-long Lunar New Year holiday that started on Jan. 25.Sales of passenger cars in January, totaling 735,500 units, were boosted by recent tax cuts and moved up 4.4% from December. China becomes the world's 6th largest retail marketPublished: 23 Apr 2009 00:46:36 PSTApr. 23, 2009 (China Knowledge) - China has become the world's sixth most popular retail market in 2008, with the number of international retailers rising to 42% from 37% a year earlier, according to the latest annual retail research report by CB Richard Ellis, the world's largest commercial real estate services provider, the Shanghai Daily reported on Wednesday.At city level, London has 60% of the world's top retailers, ranking the first one on the list. In addition, two Chinese cities secured rankings on the world's top 15 retail list in 2008. Beijing was at No.15 with 36% of global retailers present while Hong Kong ranked 13th with 37% of global retail stores. Nov. 25, 2008 (China Knowledge) - Hong Kong stocks Tuesday climbed 403.71 points or 3.24% to end the morning session at 12,861.65 points, with mainboard turnover standing at HK$22.00 billion.

Hang Seng China Enterprise Index, which tracks the overall performance of 43 Chinese mainland state-owned enterprises on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, jumped 274.56 points or 4.31% to 6,651.52 points.

Market heavyweight HSBC Holdings Plc, which accounts for the largest weighting for the Hang Seng Index, added 2.14% to HK$76.35.

Another market heavyweight China Mobile, the largest firm by capitalization in the Hong Kong market, edged up 0.08% to HK$66.05.

Sinopec, Asia's largest oil refiner surged 4.17% to HK$4.50 while PetroChina, the country's largest oil producer and also involved in refining business, advanced 4.90% to HK$5.78.

Industrial & Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) soared 6.57% to HK$3.57.

Top insurer China Life Insurance gained 3.12% to HK$19.82.

Chinese stocks down 2.94% in the morning sessionPublished: 23 Dec 2008 01:37:00 PSTDec. 23, 2008 (China Knowledge) - Chinese stocks ended lower in the morning trading session on Tuesday with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index losing 2.94%, on the central bank's cut on loan and deposit rates by 0.27%.The Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A shares and B shares on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, lost 58.48 points to close at 1929.28 points in the morning session.The Shenzhen Component Index on the smaller Shenzhen Stock Exchange dropped 3.50% or 255.12 points to stand at 7,040 points.Market heavy weight PetroChina<601857><857><PTR>, the nation's top oil producer, lost 2.56% to close at RMB 10.64, while Asia's largest oil refiner Sinopec<600028><386><SNP> dropped 4.04% to RMB 7.37.The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC)<601398><1398>, the largest of China's Big Four state-owned banks by market value, fell 1.85% to close at RMB 3.71. Operating costs, however, surged 26.94% to RMB 1.72 billion. In the reporting period, the debts of the firm's two subsidiaries totaled RMB 230 million in short term loans and RMB 440 million in long term loans, reflecting quarter-on-quarter increases of 79.04% and 49.67%, respectively. The refinery is scheduled to be operational in 2013. In addition to CNPC, the refining project's other partners include SK Engineering, SVL Engineering Services and investors from Dubai, said Merapoh Resources without elaborating. An industry insider said that Merapoh Resources has signed a 20-year contract with CNPC, which has cooperated with the Malaysian firm since 2007, to sell the refining project's production rights. However, the purchase price is not yet clear. The refining project is a part of a Malaysian project that will consist of two refineries and a pipeline crossing three states in the country, sources reported. China's Valin in talks to buy stake in FortescuePublished: 25 Feb 2009 00:00:00 PSTFeb. 25, 2009 (China Knowledge) - China's Hunan Valin Iron and Steel Group is in talks with Australia-based Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (Fortescue) on acquiring a 13% stake in the latter, sources reported.Valin is expected to pay A$500 million (US$318 million) for 225 million new shares in the Perth-based iron ore exporter.Valin will take into consideration of Fortescue's liability status and the potential risks of the investment, said Li Jianguo, general manager of Valin, without providing further details.Last week, Fortescue said it was in talks with the state-owned China Investment Corp (CIC) and London-based Anglo American plc on the capital injection plan.
